Skype: Advantages and Disadvantages

Skype's popularity has been on the rise ever since its creation in 2003.  Its free video service to anyone in the world makes it a magnet for people of all ages to create a profile and stay in touch with friends and family.  Also on the rise is its new marketing strategy towards the corporate world.  There are now more opportunities than ever for people in the business world to stay connected. However, there is some speculation that Skype is a potential safety hazard for younger users who do not know how to spot a predator.  Skype does not regulate its registration system and therefore, it is easy for someone to register for the free account without actually revealing their true identity.  So what are the advantages and disadvantages of Skype?

Advantages:
   -Free registration
-Works in any location around the world as long as you have internet service
-Can transfer money through Paypal on Skype
-Allows Skype calls to cellphones and landlines as well as other computers
-Voice and video calling as well as instant messaging

Disadvantages:
-Does not regulate identity confirmation upon registering
-Due to growing popularity, Skype may start charging for the use of its product
-Legal issues between licensing agreement holders
-May cause problems between the generations (Tech Savvy Users vs. Older Generation)
-Constant software problems that need to be addressed

Some may agree that Skype is a blessing.  For example, soldiers overseas revel in the fact that in a matter of seconds, they are able to see the faces of their loved ones back home.  However, others, such as those who have been the victim of an online predator attack or faulty software in the middle of an important meeting will argue that Skype needs some work.

The ultimate decision of whether Skype is good or bad lies with the user.  It is up to each individual to decide for themselves what to make of the new and upcoming communication technology.
